Advanced Learning Technology Journals

The field of Advanced Learning Technologies (or Technology Enhanced Learning as it is called in Europe) is rapidly growing. Many researchers from different disciplines (computer science, cognitive science, psychology, educational sciences) are working in this field and there are also many journals available that publish their work. However, it is currently not easy to select the best journal to publish your work.

To help scholars, especially PhD students, to make adequate choices about the journals to publish in, the TENcompetence Project publishes a list of journals which are the most important ones in the field. The list is agreed upon and controlled by a scientific committee which members are highly recognized scholars in the field (see list of members of the scientific committee).

The journals have been selected with the folowing criteria:

  • Journal must publish papers in the field of Advanced Learning Technologies/Technology Enhanced Learning.
  • Journal must have a published peer-review system with an editorial board consisting of well known scholars in the field.
  • English language journals only (English is the working language within the project)
  • Published papers come from international sources (so journals that publish mainly local papers are excluded)
  • Appears in a fixed frequency.
  • Publishes papers above 2000 words

Besides these academic peer-reviewed journals there are also many other professional journals. These are not listed here.

The ranking of the journals from more to less impact is rather complicated, because impact factors are only calculated on ISI journals and have a bias towards the older and larger sciences. For a new science like ALT this is not an adequate index. We use the following ranking criteria:

  • ISI indexed journals are higher ranked than non-ISI ranked journals (this is tradition in almost any scientific field)
  • Journals that are directly focussed on Advanced Learning Technologies, eg by using this or a similar term in the title are higher ranked than journals that are directed at underlying fields like computer science, cognitive science, psychology or educational research.
  • Open Access journals (full text of papers are freely available at the World Wide Web) are higher ranked than closed-access and paper-based journals. These journals are expected to have a higher impact because of the accessibility and speed of publication.
  • When two ISI journals are equal on the criteria above and the impact factors are known for both journals, than the journal with the higher impact score will be ranked higher.

This results in the following list that we have agreed upon:

How to propose a new journal to the extension list

If you want to propose a new journal to the extension list, please provide us with the following information:

  • Name of the journal
  • Link to a website (if available)
  • Publishing frequency
  • ISSN

Please send an email with these information the email-address altjournals@gmail.com
